Shubman Gill was named as the new vice-captain of the Indian T20I side that was announced for the Asia Cup. The BCCI announced a 15-member side and added five backups to name a 20-member Indian team for the continental cup.

While naming the squad, Ajit Agarkar, the Chairman of Selectors, categorically named Gill as the new vice-captain of the side. Gill’s choice as the new vice-captain has already created a lot of uproar on social media.

Not all are aligned with the management’s thought of naming him as the new T20I vice-captain of the side. This comes on the back of Gill’s numbers in T20Is, where has an average of 30.42 in 21 T20Is so far.

We See Leadership Qualities In Him - Ajit Agarkar On Shubman Gill

Meanwhile, as per reports in the Indian Express, Shubman Gill was not the first-choice for the vice-captaincy role in the Asia Cup squad. The management and Ajit Agarkar had a lot of deliberation before Gill was eventually named the vice-captain. The management were also considering other options, including Axar Patel.

However, while naming the squad for the Asia Cup, Agarkar clarified that going ahead, Shubman Gill will be in India’s plans in the team’s T20I side. Gautam Gambhir also joined the meeting virtually pressing on Gill to be the future T20I skipper for India.

“He was the vice-captain when we played in Sri Lanka. But after that, he was busy with Test cricket. We obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. He exceeded all our expectations, which is a great sign when there’s so much pressure as captain” Agarkar said.

Surya Backs Gill As Vice-Captain

Indian T20I skipper backed Agarkar, saying that the management always trusted his leadership skills and hence named him in the side.

“Gill was always part of the first-choice Indian T20 side. He missed out due to other commitments and injuries, but the leadership group has always believed in his potential” Suryakumar said.

Shubman Gill last played T20I cricket for India against Sri Lanka in 2024. Since then, he missed the series against South Africa and England. Now he is all set to make a comeback in the T20I side and possibly will open the batting as well.
