Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have issued an official statement regarding the signing of South African batter Dewald Brevis for Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). The franchise said the deal was done in compliance with the IPL regulations.
Brevis had gone unsold in the mega auction. He was later signed by CSK as the replacement for injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh. He was picked for INR 2.20 crore but had entered the auction with a base price of INR 75 lakh.
The statement from CSK follows Ravichandran Ashwin's claims on his YouTube channel, where he said that Dewald Brevis was paid more than the original offer.
CSK Respond After Ravichandran Ashwin’s Claims, Say Dewald Brevis’ Signing Within IPL Rules
CSK clarified that Brevis' signing was done as per the tournament’s regulations.
"Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL," CSK’s statement read.
Ashwin had earlier claimed that Brevis was in talks with multiple teams and CSK were willing to pay more than the base price to secure his services mid-season. He suggested that CSK agreed to pay Brevis more than the initial offer during salary negotiations.
"Is he the next AB or the first DB? Brevis had a great time with CSK last year. I came to understand two or three other teams also spoke with him, but they missed picking because of having to pay extra money. While picking up a player mid-season, there will be discussions with the player's agent to negotiate on an 'X' amount apart from the base price to acquire his services. CSK were willing to pay the extra money due to which he (Brevis) came into the franchise."
Dewald Brevis’ Rising Stock in World Cricket
Brevis impressed immediately after joining CSK. He scored 225 runs in six innings at a strike-rate of 180, including two half-centuries.
In the ongoing T20I series versus Australia, he hammered his maiden international century in the second match in Darwin. In the third game of the series, he smashed a half-century and continued his golden run with the bat.
