Rohit Sharma Captaincy Record in All Formats: T20I, ODI & Test

Rohit Sharma Captaincy record

Rohit Sharma set the social media ablaze when he announced his retirement from the Test format late in the evening on Wednesday, May 08. The 38-year-old took to Instagram and shared a heartfelt note about quitting from the red-ball format after playing his last of the 67 Test matches against Australia in December 2024. He led India in 24 Tests, winning 12, losing nine, and drawing three Test matches since taking over from Virat Kohli in 2022.

While Rohit, the ODI batter is revered for his humongous achievements, the same cannot be said about his Test career, where he averaged just shade above 40 for a Test opener. However, there is nothing to take away from the 'Hitman' as he is fondly called in the way he selflessly led India in the longest and white-ball formats of the game. The veteran also took on the role of Test opener in 2019, when he was not designated to open in the red-ball format.

Rohit Sharma is also India's very few captains to score above 5000 runs in all formats as skipper of the team. The right-hand batter also became the first captain ever to lead his team to the four finals of an ICC event - WTC Final in 2023, ODI World Cup Final in 2023, T20 World Cup Final in 2024, and ICC Champions Trophy event in 2025.

Undoubtedly, Rohit's biggest influence as the leader came in the shortest format of the game. With 80.6% record as the captain, the right-hand batter sits in the pole position for a captain with the highest winning percentage in the format, where minimum 50 games are considered. He took over in T20Is as the permanent skipper when Virat Kohli stepped down from the role after India's group-stage exit in T20 World Cup in 2021.

Rohit's biggest moment as the captain came when he lifted the T20 World Cup in 2024 in Barbados, becoming the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to lift the trophy in the T20 World Cup.

Rohit's least win percentage came in Test cricket, with only 50% win percentage from 24 games that he led. Also, he endured a humiliating whitewash as a captain against New Zealand in 2024, which was India's first ever at home in Test cricket. The 38-year-old also failed to defend the Border Gavaskar Trophy Down Under.
