The IPL 2025 season has been a tough one so far for the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The franchise suffered its fifth loss of the season as they lost to Gujarat Titans (GT) by 39 runs on Tuesday.

Chasing 199 runs to win, KKR could only muster 158 runs for 9 wickets in their 20 overs, as it was a complete batting failure from the franchise. 199 runs was a par score on the batting-friendly wicket at Eden Gardens.

However, the KKR batters crumbled under pressure much like they did in their last two chases against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) before losing to GT.

Chasing 199 runs to win, KKR lost the wicket of Rahmanullah Gurzaz (1 run off 4 balls), who was included in the side in place of Quinton de Kock. Sunil Narine (17 runs off 13 balls) and Ajinkya Rahane (50 runs off 36 balls) added a 41-run stand between themselves. The partnership was broken inside the powerplay, and KKR lost all the momentum in the run chase.

Venkatesh Iyer's innings (14 runs off 19 balls) further slowed down the scoring rate for KKR. In turn, it added pressure to the lower order, who could not stand up to the challenge. Iyer was based all over on social media after his painful knock against Gujarat Titans. Many held him as solely responsible for KKR's loss in the match.

Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, are placed at the top of the IPL 2025 points table. They have now won six of their eight games and are topping the points table. GT's top three, Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharshan and Jos Buttler, have scored more than 70 percent of the team's runs. Their pace batter has been doing a good job with the ball, and Rashid Khan returned to form in the last match against KKR, taking two wickets for 25 runs. KKR batters have allowed the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Rashid Khan to get back into form. Both the spinners were struggling to get going before facing off against KKR.

With Gujarat sitting pretty at the top with 10 points, four teams are on 10 points each - DC, RCB, PBKS, and LSG. Mumbai Indians, with three back-to-back wins, have moved up to 8 points and placed sixth on the points table. KKR is placed seventh after playing 8 games and winning just three. RR, SRH and CSK are the bottom three teams on the table with four points each. With the second half of the season underway, the teams placed in the bottom half of the points table need to win all their remaining matches to give themselves any chance of making the playoffs.
